When you put on an anesthesia mask in the operating room, you probably never wonder: how does that thing stick in place?
The bonding between the mask body and the soft air cushion relies on medical-grade adhesive. This seemingly unremarkable workstation is worth only a few tens of millions of dollars globally per year; however, for adhesive manufacturers, getting the adhesive into this workstation requires passing through several stages of quality control.
Where should the adhesive be applied? First, determine exactly what you need to bond.
When a disposable anesthesia mask is disassembled, it consists of three components: the connector, the mask body, and the air cushion (balloon). The mask body is typically made of rigid PVC, while the air cushion is made of soft PVC; between them is also a one-way valve plate.
The areas where adhesive is applied are primarily two: structural bonding between the soft PVC air cushion and the housing, and sealing bonding between the valve plate and the housing.
It sounds simple. The problem lies in the material.
Stage One: Plasticized PVC—whether it can provide sufficient adhesion is a genuine challenge.
Soft PVC is soft because it contains a large amount of plasticizer. These plasticizers gradually migrate from within the PVC to its surface, forming an oily film at the bonding interface—therefore, the adhesive cannot properly adhere to the material.
When ordinary adhesive is applied to soft PVC, it may look fine immediately after application, but after a few months it begins to peel off. This is not merely a matter of basic industrial knowledge; it is a genuine engineering challenge.
Stage Two: Biocompatibility—being non-toxic alone is not enough.
It is adhered to the mask, which is then placed over the patient’s face, enabling close contact with the respiratory tract. The composition of the adhesive and the amount of its leached components are directly incorporated into the biocompatibility assessment.
The minimum requirement is in vitro cytotoxicity according to ISO 10993-5: the gel must not cause cytotoxic cell death. However, meeting this single criterion alone is not sufficient. The group standard “Disposable Anesthetic Masks” states clearly that the minimum testing package comprises three items:
| surveillance project | Standard Requirements |
| cytotoxicity | Should be none |
| Skin irritation (primary irritation index) | <1 |
| Skin sensitization (delayed-type hypersensitivity) | No allergic reaction |
This testing package may not appear particularly extensive; the key point is that the two suppliers must each conduct their own evaluations. According to the answers to common questions issued by the Hainan Provincial Drug Administration in 2025, if the same raw material is supplied by two different vendors, the applicant must conduct separate biocompatibility assessments and performance verification for each vendor.
Stage 3: Sterilization Compatibility
Disposable face shields must be sterilized before leaving the factory. The two most commonly used methods are ethylene oxide (EO) sterilization and gamma-ray irradiation sterilization.
The adhesive must be capable of withstanding these two treatments. EO sterilization itself does not involve high temperatures; however, EO residues must be controlled below 10 μg/g. Gamma irradiation typically delivers a dose of approximately 25 kGy; consequently, the crosslinked structure of the adhesive must not become brittle, change color, or exhibit increased leaching after irradiation.
While they have passed ISO 10993-5 cytotoxicity testing, few models can simultaneously be certified for resistance to EO residues and resistance to gamma sterilization.
Consider the technical approaches collectively
In fact, there are not many viable approaches for structurally bonding an anesthesia mask.
| route | merit | short slab | Can it be used on the mask? |
| JM352 UV-curable acrylate | Instant curing, solvent-free, capable of bonding to and plasticizing PVC, and ISO 10993 compliant | Requires UV light source; some PVC materials provide UV resistance. | Mainstream solution |
UV-acrylate excels in three key aspects: rapid curing (within seconds), the ability to adhere to and plasticize PVC, and compatibility with biocompatibility testing.
Choosing adhesives is not about choosing a formulation; it is about choosing a supply chain.
After going through the process, you will find that the technical requirements for securing an anesthesia mask with adhesive material do not lie in whether it sticks firmly, but rather in the constraints imposed by the entire system:
- Adhesive for plasticized PVC
- Passes the minimum biocompatibility testing package
- Resistant to EO/gamma sterilization
- Both suppliers must undergo separate validation.
Thus, competition for this market position appears, on the surface, to be a competition over formulations; in reality, it is a competition over who can first secure a strategic position by incorporating the formulation into the customer’s newly registered certificate. Existing masks will not undergo formulation changes within the next five years; any incremental growth will come exclusively from the registration of new products—whichever company gets ahead in new-product development will secure the next five-year window.
That’s exactly how Dymax does it. It may not be the largest adhesive manufacturer, but it is the only one that directly labels “anesthesia mask adhesive” on its product pages. This labeling itself serves as a strategic positioning tool: when mask manufacturers are initiating new projects and search for adhesives for anesthesia masks, this is the first result that appears.
At domestic rubber manufacturers, JM352 from Jumi Company has already passed ISO 10993 testing and is recommended for bonding soft PVC in laryngeal masks. Laryngeal masks and anesthesia masks both fall under airway devices and involve bonding soft PVC; therefore, the technical transfer gap is not substantial. However, the recommended application for laryngeal masks and those included in the registration certificates of a particular new mask are still separated by the entire process of supplier review, biocompatibility validation, and change registration.
