Polyurethane PU systems are reactive polymers that cure into a tough, flexible or rigid solid, depending on the formulation. They bond well to plastics, metals and composites, resist vibration and thermal cycling, and can be formulated to stay clear where visual inspection of the component underneath matters.
Choosing a polyurethane grade comes down to four questions: how much hardness or flexibility the joint needs, how thick the cured section is, how much heat the assembly will see, and whether optical clarity must be maintained over time. Thick sections need slower, less exothermic cure systems, while thin coatings are selected mainly for adhesion, dielectric strength and moisture resistance.
Where PU systems are used
Typical applications include encapsulating circuit boards and sensors, potting connectors, coating outdoor equipment housings, and bonding mixed-material assemblies where a rigid epoxy would crack. For jobs where colour stability and light transmission must survive years of heat and UV exposure, a clear long-term yellowing-resistant polyurethane encapsulation coating compound is a practical starting point, and further options are listed in our Polyurethane (PU) category.
