Potting & Encapsulating Compound

Potting encapsulating compound fills a housing or cavity and cures into a solid or gel mass that protects a circuit from moisture, dust, vibration and electrical stress. The compound becomes part of the assembly, so its hardness, adhesion and thermal behaviour must suit the device it surrounds.

What to consider

The first decision is the cured state: a rigid epoxy for mechanical support and chemical resistance, a flexible silicone for wide temperature range and low stress on solder joints, or a soft gel that cushions delicate parts and can be cut away for repair. Two-part systems cure through the full thickness, while one-part systems cure with ambient moisture or heat. Pot life, mix ratio, viscosity, exotherm in large masses and the option to rework all affect the process. Fine-pitch or fragile leads usually call for a low-stress material, while outdoor and vehicle units may need stronger adhesion and fluid resistance.
