A cylindrical retaining adhesive is a one-part anaerobic compound used to fix bearings, bushes, sleeves, shafts and gears into their housings by filling the gap between the two cylindrical surfaces. It replaces press fits and keyways where the fit is too loose, and it spreads load across the whole contact area instead of a few points.
Retaining compounds cure after assembly, when air is excluded from the joint, so the parts can still be positioned and aligned before the bond sets. Gap-filling ability matters because machined surfaces are never perfectly matched; the compound also prevents fretting corrosion and micro-movement between the parts, and it seals the joint against moisture and oil.
Applications and selection points
Typical uses include bearing retention in motor end bells, gear and pulley fitting, worn shaft repair, sleeve and bush assembly, and keyed joints on pumps, gearboxes and power tools. Selection depends on the diametral gap, the substrate, the shear strength required, the temperature and the dismantling method, and a primer may be needed on passive metals. JOME supplies a 638 cylindrical metal bearing adhesive for fixation, and the cylindrical retaining adhesive range covers retention work on metal assemblies.
