Epoxy Potting Compound

Epoxy potting compound is a filled resin system poured into a housing so that the assembly inside is fully embedded once it cures. The cured block holds components in place, spreads mechanical shock and vibration over the volume, keeps moisture and dust away from the circuit and, in thermally filled grades, gives heat a path out.

The choice turns on four things: the thermal conductivity required, the viscosity needed to fill the housing without trapping air, the working time before the mix gels, and the hardness the finished part can tolerate. Rigid unfilled epoxies give the strongest mechanical protection, while soft or thermally filled systems reduce stress on delicate parts and improve heat transfer. Two-part systems cure at room temperature or with mild heat, and the mix ratio plus degassing control whether the fill is void-free.

Processing notes

Housings should be clean and dry, and the resin dispensed slowly to avoid drawing air into the fill. Where heat matters, the path from component through potting to case has to be planned, not assumed.
