Thermal Conductive Potting Compound

Thermal conductive potting compound fills a housing and pulls heat from the components inside into the enclosure wall, so the assembly runs cooler without a separate heat sink or fan. It acts as both the electrical insulation and the thermal path through the unit.

Choosing a grade

Thermal performance depends on the filler loading, the cured thickness and how well the compound wets the components. Higher filler content moves more heat but raises viscosity and can add weight or hardness. Silicone-based grades stay flexible and handle wide temperature swings, polyurethane grades combine toughness with good flow, and epoxy grades add mechanical strength and adhesion. Two-part systems cure through thick sections and are usual for large casts, while soft gels suit boards that must be reworked. Mix ratio, pot life, exotherm in large masses and the thermal expansion of the housing all influence the result.
