A UV potting compound is a light-curing resin used to encapsulate, protect and mechanically support electronic assemblies. Unlike a two-part potting resin, it needs no mixing ratio and no long oven cycle: the part is filled, exposed to UV light and returned to the line, which shortens work in progress and removes mixing errors.
Light-cured potting works best where the resin layer is thin enough for ultraviolet energy to penetrate, so it is common for thin-layer encapsulation, edge protection, sensor windows and coating-like protection rather than deep blocks. Fillers, pigments and opaque housings block light, and complex shapes create shadows; in those cases a secondary cure mechanism or a different chemistry is needed.
Consider the required depth of cure, the thermal and dielectric demands of the assembly, adhesion to the housing material and the operating temperature. Potting compounds also differ in hardness: a rigid resin supports components and resists vibration, while a softer compound relieves stress on delicate joints and wire bonds. The correct balance depends on what the electronics must survive in service.
