Waterproof Coating

Waterproof coating is a protective layer applied over a finished assembly so that moisture, condensation and occasional immersion cannot reach the circuitry or joint beneath it. The coating forms a continuous film across the surface, sealing pinholes, solder joints and component leads while staying thin enough not to change the fit or weight.

Chemistry determines where a coating can be used. Polyurethane films are common for general electronics protection, silicone conformal coatings stay elastic over wide temperature swings and suit severe thermal cycling, and UV-curing materials allow a fast cure on exposed areas. Potting compounds are chosen instead when the whole volume must be filled and supported. Adhesion to the substrate, cure mechanism, film thickness and transparency requirements guide the decision.

Selection points for waterproof coating

Cleanliness before application matters more than any other step, because flux residue, mold release and handling oils cause dewetting and early failure. Masking of connectors and test points, the cure schedule and the rework policy should be defined before production.
