Silicone Sealants

Silicone sealants are elastomeric sealing materials built on a silicone polymer backbone. After curing they stay flexible across a wide temperature range, resist water, ozone and weathering, and absorb movement between parts instead of cracking. That combination makes them a default choice for sealing, gasketing and bonding where thermal cycling or vibration is present.

Most industrial grades are RTV one-part products that cure on exposure to moisture in the air, so they need no mixing and suit manual or automated dispensing. Two-part addition-cure silicones are used when a faster, deeper or more controlled cure is needed, and thermally conductive versions add heat-transfer capability for power electronics. The deciding factors are cure speed, cure depth, adhesion to the substrate, hardness, and whether heat has to pass through the seal.

Typical sealing duties

Applications include enclosure and connector sealing, formed-in-place gaskets, and the thermal interface between a device and its heat sink. Surfaces must be clean and free of oil, and primer choice and cure time depend on the substrate and joint geometry.
