Silicone Potting Compound

Silicone potting compound encapsulates a circuit in a flexible, rubber-like mass that absorbs vibration, thermal expansion and mechanical shock. Because the cured silicone stays soft, it puts little stress on solder joints and fine leads, which makes it a common choice for sensitive electronics.

Types and processing

Two families cover most work. Addition-cure systems need heat to cure and suit fast, deep sections, while condensation-cure systems cure at room temperature with moisture and suit large parts or heat-sensitive components. Soft gels stay tacky and cushion the board, and they can be cut away for repair. Harder grades give more mechanical protection and adhesion. Some contaminants and certain materials can inhibit cure, so cleaning and a compatibility check matter. Low-viscosity grades fill tight spaces, and thixotropic grades stay where they are dispensed.
