Thermal Conductive Sealant

Thermal conductive sealant is a gap-filling material that both seals a joint and moves heat across it. Filled with thermally conductive particles, it bonds or fills between a heat-generating component and its heat sink, chassis or housing, replacing the insulating air gap that would otherwise sit in the thermal path.

The main decision is how much heat has to move and how compliant the interface must be. Silicone-based sealants stay elastic after cure, so they cope with thermal expansion, vibration and mismatched expansion rates between materials, and they can be dispensed automatically for repeatable beads. Two-component systems allow deeper sections and faster throughput, while one-component RTV grades suit manual work and repairs. Bond strength, cure depth, hardness and dielectric behaviour must be checked against the application.

Applications

Typical uses are power supplies, LED modules, motor and driver housings, battery packs, and any enclosure where a sealed joint also has to carry heat away from the device.
