Thermal conductive grease is a paste-like interface material that fills the microscopic air gaps between a heat-generating component and its heat sink. Air conducts heat poorly, so even a small amount of trapped air raises the thermal resistance of the joint; the grease displaces it and creates a continuous path for heat.
Unlike a thermal pad, grease conforms to rough surfaces and can be spread extremely thin, which gives low contact resistance, but it offers no mechanical strength and no electrical insulation unless a specific non-conductive formulation is chosen. It is normally applied between a chip or power device and a heatsink, clamped so that the joint stays thin.
Selection points
The main variables are thermal conductivity, viscosity and pump-out resistance under thermal cycling. Highly filled pastes conduct better but are harder to dispense, while low-viscosity pastes spread easily and suit automated dispensing. Because grease never cures, long-term stability under heat and vibration is the practical limit, and controlled clamping pressure matters more than the exact thickness applied.
JOME supplies a thermal conductive silicone grease across a range of conductivity levels, plus related materials in our Thermal Conductive Grease category.
