Fluorinated sealants are based on fluorosilicone or fluoropolymer chemistry, where fluorine in the backbone and side groups resists swelling and breakdown by fuels, oils, solvents and other non-polar fluids. A standard silicone seals well but swells in hydrocarbon contact; the fluorinated grades hold their shape and sealing force in the same environments, which is why they appear in fuel systems, engine compartments and chemical handling equipment.
Choosing a fluorinated sealant means matching cure type, hardness and elongation to the joint. One-component RTV grades cure from atmospheric moisture and suit formed-in-place gaskets and field repairs; two-part grades cure through the full section and are used where deep sections must set reliably. Low-temperature flexibility, compression set and adhesion to the specific metal or plastic flange all influence whether the seal survives repeated thermal and mechanical cycling.
Typical applications
Applications include fuel pump housings, carburettor and sensor seals, oil pan and valve cover gaskets, and seals around components exposed to solvent vapour. Bonding surfaces should be clean and dry, and the sealant should be given its full cure before the assembly sees fuel or oil. JOME supplies fluorinated sealants, including Single-component RTV fluorosilicone sealant, for these service conditions.
