Thermal conductive pad is a pre-formed, soft sheet placed between a hot component and a cooling surface, replacing grease where a clean, dry, gap-filling interface is preferred. The pad is compressible, so it absorbs tolerance stack-up between a board and a housing or heatsink and covers uneven surfaces in a single step.
Because pads are supplied as sheets or die-cut shapes, assembly is simple and repeatable: no dispensing, no smearing, no pump-out. The trade-off is higher thermal resistance than a thin grease layer, because the pad itself has thickness. Softer, more compliant pads perform better at low clamping pressure, while harder pads suit high-pressure assemblies.
How to specify
Start with the gap to be filled, the mounting pressure available, and whether electrical insulation is required. Then choose thickness, hardness and thermal conductivity together, since a thick pad with high conductivity can still perform worse than a thin pad with lower conductivity. Die-cut shapes that match the component footprint reduce waste and assembly error.
