CA glue selection starts with one question: how fast must the joint set, and at what cost to toughness? Cyanoacrylate adhesive, the chemistry behind CA glue, cures in seconds on most substrates, and that speed is exactly why 401 adhesive and similar instant adhesive grades dominate repair benches and small-assembly lines worldwide. JOME supplies a full ladder of instant adhesive grades for industrial customers in more than 30 countries and supports grade selection with free samples and TDS documentation.
How CA glue cures and why that matters
CA glue cures through anionic polymerisation triggered by surface moisture. A thin film sets in seconds; a thick bond line traps unreacted monomer and stays weak. Understanding this is the first step in CA glue selection: every joint design decision follows from the cure mechanism. Gap control, fixture pressure and open time all matter more than the headline fixture speed printed on the label.
CA glue grades differ mainly in viscosity, and the viscosity choice maps to the gap. Low-viscosity grades wick into tight fits and pre-assembled joints. Medium-viscosity grades are the general-purpose default. High-viscosity grades fill wider gaps and stay where they are placed on vertical surfaces. Flexible and rubber-toughened grades trade some fixture speed for peel and impact resistance.
401 adhesive and the grade ladder
CA glue in the 401 grade is the general-purpose entry in most instant adhesive lines: medium viscosity, fast fixture, good strength on rubber and plastics. The numbered family usually runs from low-viscosity wicking grades through to high-viscosity gap-filling grades, with rubber-toughened and low-bloom variants branching off. 401 adhesive handles the majority of small-assembly bonding, and the specialised grades handle the rest.
CA glue naming varies between suppliers, so selection should follow the datasheet rather than the product number. What stays constant across the class is the substrate rule: CA glue bonds porous and polar surfaces well, while polyolefins such as PP and PE need surface treatment first. JOME supplies surface treatment agents alongside instant adhesive grades so the pairing is validated as one system.
Where CA glue wins and where it loses
CA glue wins on small parts, fast lines and repair work where the joint sees light to moderate load. Electronics sub-assemblies, rubber trim, plastic housings and consumer goods all rely on CA glue daily. Where the joint sees sustained peel, heavy impact or wide thermal cycling, a structural adhesive or a flexible sealant is the better class of material.
CA glue also has limits worth naming. Bloom, the white residue some grades leave near the joint, matters on dark and cosmetic parts; low-bloom grades cost more and set slightly slower. Odor and skin irritation demand ventilation and gloves on production lines. And rework is effectively impossible: CA glue joints are permanent, so alignment fixtures deserve attention before the first drop is dispensed.
Substrates and surface preparation for CA glue
CA glue bonds best to clean, close-fitting surfaces with some polarity: steel, aluminium, rubber, ABS, PC and ceramics all bond quickly. Oils, release agents and mould lubricants are the usual culprits when a joint fails on a supposedly easy substrate. A simple solvent wipe before assembly removes most of them and is the cheapest process improvement available to any instant adhesive line.
CA glue on polyolefins and fluoropolymers is a different problem entirely. PP, PE and PTFE have low surface energy, and the adhesive beads up instead of wetting. Surface treatment agents, plasma or primers raise the surface energy enough for wetting and cure. JOME supplies the primers that pair with its instant adhesive grades, and the pair is validated together so the adhesion data carries to production.
Dispensing and process control
CA glue dispensing is simple in principle and exacting in practice. Manual bottles work for low volumes; positive-displacement dispensers with suck-back prevent stringing and drool on automated lines. Humidity accelerates cure, so dry shop air slows fixture time unexpectedly in winter. Accelerator sprays force cure on inactive surfaces and in deep gaps, at the cost of a visible residue around the joint.
CA glue storage deserves a note: it’s best to keep unopened bottles in a refrigerator and warm them to room temperature before opening, which keeps shelf life near the stated figure and prevents condensation inside the bottle. Opened bottles absorb moisture from the air and thicken. Date codes and FIFO rotation keep the line supplied with predictable material, and that predictability is worth more than the small price difference between suppliers.
Quality control on the line
CA glue quality control on a production line is mostly process control in disguise. Weigh dispensed drops on a scale at shift start and end to confirm volume. Pull bonded coupons per shift and break them by hand: a consistent failure mode beats a single high number. Date-code every bottle on the line, and remove material past its open-shelf window. These habits cost minutes and catch the drift that otherwise surfaces as a batch of weak joints.
CA glue rework policy belongs in the assembly document too. Because the bond is permanent, disassembly means heat, solvent or mechanical force, and each option risks the parts. Where service access requires future disassembly, a lower-strength grade or a different chemistry class is the right answer from the start. JOME technical support helps teams weigh these trade-offs against the actual service plan before drawings freeze.
Selection checklist for procurement
CA glue packaging options change the economics of a line. Small bottles suit bench work and repair kits; bulk cartridges and drums serve automated dispensing where consumption justifies the changeover. Ask the supplier which pack sizes ship with the grade, and whether custom fill or private label is available for distributor programmes. JOME offers OEM and custom formulation services alongside standard grades, so the packaging question can be settled in the same conversation as the chemistry.
CA glue performance in the field is verified with simple tests: fixture time on the real substrate pair, lap shear on production-representative coupons, and a humidity-aging check where the assembly sees damp service. Numbers from the datasheet are a starting point; the coupon that matches your line is the evidence. JOME provides free sample quantities sized for exactly these trial runs on your own line.
CA glue specifications close with five inputs: the substrate pair, the gap range, the fixture time the takt allows, the cosmetic requirement around the joint, and the service temperature. JOME manufactures these instant adhesive grades in its own factory with RoHS and REACH compliant grades available, and provides TDS documentation so incoming inspection can quote stated numbers. Customers in more than 30 countries build their assembly processes on these grades.
CA glue work connects to the rest of the bonding picture: surface preparation on difficult plastics is covered in the surface treatment agent guide, structural alternatives sit in the structural adhesive range, and fastening-related bonding continues in the bolt thread locking guide. The previous entry in this series covers the JOMS 5230 battery cell potting solution. The Shanghai JOME Industrial homepage frames the full portfolio, and project questions go to the JOME technical team. The full JOME product list includes every grade family named above, and dispensing consumables are covered in the surface preparation range.
